Deopham History

Rev. Robert Marler Cremer

Biography

According to the Church of England Clergy Database, he was ordained deacon in Norwich Cathedral on May 25th 1823 and ordained as a priest on October 17th 1824.
He was licensed as a stipendiary curate for Deopham on the same day as his ordination to the priesthood on a stipend of “fifty pounds and the surplice fees”.
He first appears in the register of burials on October 22nd 1824.
On the 3rd November of that year he was appointed to be stipendiary curate of Morley Saint Botolph with the Chapel of Saint Peter on a stipend of “seventy five pounds and the surplice fees”. It is not clear whether this appointment was concurrent with his Deopham responsibilities.

On August 30th 1826, the Rev R.M. Cremer gave a report on the Sunday school at Morley, but also commented on the Deopham Sunday School which is under his care.

In 1827-8, the Rev. R.M. Cremer appears in the petitions seeking a reduction in the sentence for deportation passed on Robert Wilson. He is described there as “Minister” and “Curate”.

In 1834 he took up posts at Knapton and Swafield (near North Walsham). Each of these parishes carried a stipend of  “fifty pounds and the surplice fees”.
