Deopham History

Shelton

One of the oldest burial records in the Deopham church registers (which go back to 1560) is that of Sir Raphe Shelton who was buried on September 26th 1561. His family is named by Francis Blomefield as being one of the benefactors who sponsored the building of the present church. It also appears from Blomefield that the Sheltons were supporters of the Assumption Guild which had a chapel at the east end of the south aisle.

There may be a link between the Sheltons of Deopham and the Sheltons of Shelton village and Shelton Hall. However, I have not been able to find any evidence for this, and without such it seems imprudent to repeat this connection. If you have that evidence, please let me know – contact details at foot of page.

This wedding is also recorded in the Parish Register, albeit with a date of August 3rd.
